Mathis Wine, Grenache, Sonoma Valley
Mathis Grenache is in a category of its own. The Grenache clone is relatively rare for the US; even rarer, it is grown in a premium site for thick-skinned varieties (most often reserved for Cabernet Sauvignon). He complements it with Petite Sirah, Carignane and a dash of Alicante Bouchet to arrive at a blend that authentically captures its appellation. The wine is aged in neutral French oak casks. In the glass, the wine is reminiscent of the wines of Spain’s Priorat region and Peter’s take is that this is the wine the site wants to make.

Vineyards: Mathis Vineyard, 350’ elevation; volcanic soils (Solomon, St. Helen, Basalt, Rhyolite)
Farming: Organic
Vinification: 100% de-stemmed into 1.5 ton open top bins, punched down by hand 2-3 time per day. Pressed and recheck into barrel for aging.
Aging: 28 months in neutral French oak
